Philosophy

At South Mornington Preschool our programs focus is of a strong belief that the children are connected to the wider community and environment through everyday experiences and interactions.

At South Mornington Preschool, our curriculums are centred around the children where we as educators practice a holistic and integrated approach to each child’s learning journey. We recognise each child brings with them a wealth of knowledge, that we foster through forming secure, reciprocal, and responsive relationships. With this, we acknowledge the interconnected relationships that form each child’s journey, through their families, their culture and the wider community, valuing collaborative partnerships to help guide our practices.

Through our everyday connections and commitment to developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), and the Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan, we strive to embed sustainable practices within our teachings, that pay respect to our Earth and its natural resources. This is supported further through our ongoing First Nations learnings, where we empower their ancient wisdom perspectives to be embedded into our services culture, to know the land around us, the animals, the waterways and the people. This enhances our communities First Nations knowledge, encouraging them to care for the land, animals, waterways and people; just as Bundjil, the creator spirit, and Waang, the protector spirit, would like.

We believe that respect and kindness is the key to all relationships, allowing us to acknowledge each child’s unique and diverse abilities, creating an inclusive and welcoming space for all. We foster each child’s learning dispositions, to create a supportive environment that each child can explore and be in the here and now.

Our environment is filled with curiosity, creativity, imagination and the time to explore it at their own pace. Children’s voices are the focal point of all we do, following children’s natural urge to learn and understand our world through individualised, and play-based experiences.

South Mornington Preschool is a Child Safe Organisation and we strive to embed child safety in everyday thinking and practice. We respect the obligation we have in keeping children and young people safe, and acknowledge that their health, safety and wellbeing is our top priority. Our aim is to empower each child to feel autonomy over their bodies, and their choices. Placing confidence in their abilities, ensuring they feel strong, trusted and capable.

We see South Mornington Preschool as a community, and every member of our community works together to enrich the lives and learning of the children who attend here.

We acknowledge the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional custodians of the land and waterways on which we meet, work and play. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all First Nations people. We collectively strive within our practices to create a space that promotes reconciliation toward undoing the harmful impacts of colonisation, to create a harmonious future for all

A special thank you to Aunty Trish for guiding our acknowledgement 2024
